A Historical and Pictorial Guide To American Christmas
Pipes
The American Christmas Pipe was first made at the suggestion of John
Hayes in 1983. John had openned up his own store in Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax,
Va. two years previously. He served his apprenticeship at Georgetown Tobacco
. After pouring through much of the pipe literature and catalogs my partner
Curt and I had collected, we decided upon a shape out of the Pipe Dan catalog,
out of Denmark. It was a very graceful, small, Danish apple with a curved
shank. We thought to increase the size a bit without losing its graceful
proportions. The 1983 Christmas Pipe was born.

I think that year we might have made 8-10 certainly no more. They ranged
in price from $35 -$100 at most. The dating on them read:
The next year we were looking for a different more robust shape. Something
difficult and unusual to make as to show off our pipe making skills. We
settled upon a full bent panel. As before not too many were made, probably
18 pieces, with a price range similar to the '83 pipe.
