TODAYS WORK

3/7/2000

Today s work consists three horns that I had the pleasure of making just because I felt like it! I had made some a couple years ago after seeing James Galway smoking one in one of the early issues of P&T magazine. I decided to revisit the shape. I ve had a cold the past week and late at night in between coughing jags I ve been thinking about , whatelse, pipe shapes. An old shape I kept coming back to was a Bridge pipe or Thumbhole. I realized it was going to keep bothering me until I made one.

I got very lucky in choosing a perfect block! No flaws, good grain and lots of natural brown color in the briar. This pipe has no finish on it except carnuba wax. I ve never seen a block so naturally colorful. If I can get hold of a digital camera I ll reshoot this pipe as it has a lot of interesting angles that a flat bed scanner just can t capture. The first three pipes are available under Unique Bents and the fourth under Black and Tan in the web store.

This first horn is a variation I came up with that I call The Shofar.
