A couple weeks ago I got an e mail from noted collector Bruce Harris inquiring about the 1987 Pipe Collectors International ( PCI ) Pipe of the year. Curt and I, were two of the companies that made pipes for them that year. He was able to obtain an unsmoked one off E Bay and he was looking for any additional info I could give him. Bruce , having the inquiring mind that he does, went and did some research. One of the things he came upon in an old PCI magazine was this add:
He asked me for some additional info. There wasn t much, I remebered and order of 12-20 from George of the Churchwarden in CO , who has since passed away. The only thing I could give him was a good pix of the pipe as I have one stamped 1988, tho not numbered edition on it. Don t know if we ever did this on the set.
The other info I had for him was that when we did a series of one shape we generally archived one pipe or stummel and I had one. Not sure why, but I continue this practice today. You can faintly read Berkshire written in pencil on the pipe:
Bruce asked if I could make him up this stummel. Realizing ther stummel had been sitting in a box for the last 13 years I figured it would be better collected by Bruce than in a dusty box and I made it up for him as a Coral , size 4.
To be honest , I am very flattered that someone like Bruce would take an interest in this small facet of the history of my pipe making. It was certainly, a pure , pure , pleasure !
