THE HONEYMOONERS

Today I had a visit from longtime customer, David Hinkelman , and his wife Kim. They arrived in the midst of the traditional January thaw and were able to get down our generally ice covered road and even up the driveway! David has been buying my pipes for years and just moved to Philadelphia. He told me he was taking some time off and asked if he could come see the shop. When the introductions were made I found out they had been married three days ago and were on their honeymoon. Now the Poconos are a noted honeymoon destinations, heartshaped bath tubs et al, but the pipe shop generally isn t one of the hot spots in any of the brochures....

While I was out rescuing my wife, who locked her keys in the car, David found SB 308 the fly tyers pipe, and was merrily smoking it when I got back. I asked them if they wanted to see how a pipe was made and we filed into the shop. I asked him if there was a particular shape he d like to see and he responded that one of his favorites was a Gold Apple. I thought this would work out well as I really enjoy making that shape and I had a special order for a GA blast. About an hour later I had one shaped; it had come out well nice flame grain with only a couple pits. He asked to see how they were finished so I stained it with the Sunrise finish and he announced he wanted that pipe also . Here s a pix of the pipe as well as one of David and his bride:

While they were here I showed David how to access ASP so he ll be joining us upon his return.

The next two pipes are in the web catalog. I finished them up this moring. The first is a freehand, a design I came up with after I finished working on the Special Order from Hell and I needed to let loose. Rather than a reverse curve shank, as in a Hawkbill, it s got a reverse curve bowl:

Next is one of the numerous 1/2 bent apples that I will be putting up left over from the SOFH series:
