Todays work is short today as I ve been mostly working on the Christmas pipes which should be posted tomorrow! Yeah! My good friend and erstwhile colleague Rad Davis was making a billiard special order and I decided to do one also as a break from the Christmas pipes. I found a great block which allowed me to make a large classic billiard. This came out so well, IMO, that I decided to send it to my silversmith for a heavy dress silver band. The next pipe was a heart breaker. It has stunning dense grain and is a very hard piece of briar. My pulse was racing as I cut out the shape but as I got to the bottom of the block, I saw the curse of the " red briar". This occurs sometimes in dense tightly grained wood that has a red or pinkish tinge on the bottom of the block. The result is always tiny shallow little cracks in the wood. Almost as if the block was too dense to contain it. The reults while cosmetic ruin what could be an incredible smooth straight grain.
